Ever since it debuted in theaters in December of 2009, James Cameron’s science fiction epic Avatar, has become a cultural phenomenon, it kickstarted the trend of 3D movies and is still the highest grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office (though it was briefly unseated by Avengers: Endgame). The film is set in the future and follows Jake Sully, an injured former Marine who is recruited for a mission on the alien planet of Pandora. He soon is transported into the body of one of the Na’Vi and forms a close relationship with one of the Na’Vi whose name is Neytiri. From romance, action, suspense, and science fiction, Avatar has it all. Even eleven years after the film’s original release the CGI still holds up magnificently and there was clearly a lot of work that went into making the film. From all the motion-capture technology for the human actors to portray the Na’Vi (and even mo-cap for the film’s animal actors), as well as building the film’s extensive sets digitally and physically, there was clearly a lot that went into making Avatar look as beautiful as it does. From Na’Vi tribal dances, to kisses, creating both beast and machine, and performing out of this world stunts, Cameron and his team clearly went the extra mile when bringing Avatar to life. There is really no question why the film has become so big in the pop culture landscape and with the several sequels on the horizon, it’s footprint is about to get even larger. "Titanic" director James Cameron is conducting his own test to find out once and for all if Jack would have lived had Rose left a bit more room on the floating piece of wood at the end of the 1997 movie. The test is featured in an upcoming National Geographic special called "Titanic: 25 Years Later." Cameron simulated what Jack and Rose went through in the freezing North Atlantic waters. He even chose stunt doubles with similar body types to Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Few people have created more iconic cinematic creatures than Stan Winston - whether it’s the dreadlocked, mandible-faced Predator or the towering Alien Queen or the seemingly real animatronic dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, his work is synonymous with some of the most memorable movie moments. Twelve years after his first film credit, Winston’s career – and status as one of the great VFX practitioners – reached a new level with The Terminator, his first collaboration with director James Cameron, creating the iconic cyborg nemesis. From this partnership bloomed a working relationship that would earn Winston three Oscars: for Best Visual Effects on Aliens, and the Best Visual Effects and Best Make-Up awards for Terminator 2: Judgement Day. (He would also win a fourth, for his groundbreaking work on Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.) For our opening screening of The Terminator (1984), we got a special message from director James Cameron deep in post-production on Avatar 3, who talked about making the film and his relationship with Stan Winston. 🤍

Making of the Titanic Sinking Scene — breaking down this marvel of practical effects mixed with cutting-edge CGI to recreate one of the most tragic events of the 20th century. The Making of Titanic ►► 🤍 StudioBinder Blog ►► 🤍 ───────────────────── Chapters: 00:00 - Intro — Titanic sinking scene breakdown 00:49 - Pre-Production 02:06 - Production 05:35 - Post-Production 08:16 - Takeaways ───────────────────── Making of Titanic Sinking Scene James Cameron’s Titanic is perfectly named. The scope and budget of his film were equaled only by the building of the RMS Titanic herself. But the most fascinating aspect of the making of Titanic was the mix of massive sets, practical special effects, and cutting-edge CGI. Together they produced a kind of spectacle that Hollywood may never make the same way again. In this video, we’re going to focus on the Titanic sinking scene and the incredible story behind its making. First, there were the sets themselves. In a brand new studio built in Rosarito, Mexico, specifically for the production of James Cameron’s Titanic, a nearly full-sized replica of the ship was constructed. To accommodate the Titanic sinking scene, the ship was also built in sections that could be used for specific actions during the sinking. The bow section could be tilted down and actually submerged into the tank. And the stern section was mounted on a separate hydraulic rig that could tilt it up at 90 degrees for the ship’s final, vertical descent into the water. But to capture the size of the set, there didn’t exist a camera crane large enough. In typical James Cameron fashion, he didn’t go home, he went big. He mounted cameras onto a massive construction crane that could ride along train tracks like the world’s biggest camera dolly. Hanging from the crane was a platform that could also be raised and lowered with a Wescam mounted underneath. For certain shots of the Titanic sinking scene, miniatures were used. For example, when the stern rises up out of the water, two old-school techniques were employed to help sell the illusion. First, a miniature was shot at between 60-75 frames per second and, second, a foreground shot of extras floating in the water underneath it. Also, in typical James Cameron fashion, they pushed the limits of what CGI could accomplish in 1997. This included one of the earliest uses of motion-capture performances, a digital ocean, and stitching the practical set with miniatures and CG portions of the ship in the same shot. The full-sized set could only be tilted at 6 degrees, much shallower than what they needed. So, a simple solution was found — Dutch angle the camera and composite in a new water/horizon line. All in all, the Titanic Sinking Scene is a marvel to behold. From the old-school techniques to the revolutionary visual effects, it is perhaps the apex of Hollywood movie magic. Sadly, since CGI can do just about anything these days, this type of filmmaking may have sunk along with Jack and the ill-fated RMS Titanic. #FilmTheory #VideoEssay #Filmmaking ───────────────────── VIDEO EDITOR: BRANDON SCULLION ───────────────────── ♬ SONGS USED: “Crash Into Me” - Dave Mathews Band “The Sinking” - James Horner “Distant Memories“ - James Horner “Leaving Port “- James Horner “Its Just The Beginning“ - Marie Hines “Southampton“ - James Horner “Rose“ - James Horner “Hard To Starboard“ - James Horner “Leaves Drifting” - St. Leon “The Final Shore” Jordan Critz “Unable To Stay, Unwilling To Leave“ - James Horner “My Heart Will Go On” - Celine Dion, James Horner Music by Artlist ► 🤍 Music by Artgrid ► 🤍 Music by Soundstripe ► 🤍 Music by MusicBed ► 🤍 ───────────────────── SUBSCRIBE to StudioBinder’s YouTube channel! ►► 🤍 Looking for a production management solution for your film? "Avatar" director James Cameron says fans won't have to wait too long for the next "Avatar" movie after "Avatar: The Way of Water." In an interview with CinemaBlend's Sean O'Connell during a press day in London, Cameron said: "It’s been five years of basically unbroken production, right? So we started in September 2017, and we made/essentially completed all production photography and capture on two, basically two and a half movies: ["Avatar 2"], ["Avatar 3"], the first part of ["Avatar 4"]. And then we posted ["The Way of Water"], and now we’re going to post ["Avatar 3"]. So it won’t be 13 years until the next one. If everything works out, it should be only another two years. So that’s nothing." #avatar #avatar3 #jamescameron #avatar2

He is best known for making science fiction and epic films. Cameron first gained recognition for directing The Terminator (1984). He found further critical and commercial success with Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), and the comedy thriller True Lies (1994). His other big-budget productions include Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009), with Titanic earning him Academy Awards in Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing. Avatar, filmed in 3D technology, also garnered him nominations in the same categories. Cameron's films have grossed approximately US$2 billion in North America and US$6 billion worldwide. Avatar and Titanic are the highest and third highest-grossing films of all time, earning $2.85 billion and $2.19 billion, respectively. 1. Directing is a state of mind, so put yourself all in. Do anything you can, no matter how small, to make yourself a director. Then it’s just a matter of scale and dedication. 2.  To get the audience over the hump of watching something that might be considered boring (like a period film), make them fall in love with your characters first.   3. Make your film an extension of you. When thinking of ideas, think about your interests, your inner truth. Even to smaller details like dreams, or hobbies, that you can further draw from. 4. Inspiration, and opportunity, can come from anywhere. Take the chance, be brave, follow the idea and see if you can catch lightning in a bottle.   5. When creating a sequel just try to make the stand alone film you envision. While you have basic rules to stick to, characters to use, don't lose sight of your talent and your unique vision for what the project should be. 6. Cinema is a mixture of transporting your audience into another spectacular world, while also being able to make that story, those emotions, relatable. Create a journey, in every sense. 7. Make your own luck. As a new director, working on other projects is not only more difficult, but ripe for mistakes and issues. So, write your own material and create your own films to more effectively build up your career and name in the industry. 8. It’s never too late to create. You need to have the passion, and dedication to start learning some of the basics of film, and also the passion to truly follow your dream. But it can always be started, or picked back up. 9. Directing requires stamina to power through it. Allow your crew to help you to create great work, don't think you have to do it all alone. Especially when it gets difficult as a new filmmaker.  10. Rule for pitching: A script or proof of concept is a great way to show not only that you’re serious, but also to get across larger more complex ideas. Pitching without those is a very difficult, often unsuccessful method.
