Is Microdosing The Future of Marijuana?

The creator of LSD, Dr. Albert Hofmann, believed that ingesting tiny amounts of the drug could have therapeutic value, and so-called “microdoses” have since been proposed as a substitute for everything from Adderall to marriage counseling. Now, as more states legalize marijuana, the trend that began with hallucinogens has grown to include microdoses of THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in weed. VICE News traveled to Portland, Oregon, to meet Ethan Ernest, creator of marijuana microdose pills called Mirth Control, which contain a fraction of the THC found in a typical joint or batch of edibles. Earnest compares Mirth Control to “open-source Xanax. Other products in the new weed microdosing category push the envelope even further with suggestions about purported medical uses. As national attitudes and laws around cannabis use have evolved, so have the commercially grown strains of the plant. Some marijuana varieties today contain levels of THC, the drug’s psychoactive compound, as high as 50 percent, compared to around 5 percent a generation ago. But as science correspondent Miles O'Brien reports, the effects of cannabis on the human brain are still relatively unknown. Smoking a joint seems to be the most popular way of using marijuana. Weed-infused cookies, brownies, and candies — called edibles — have also gained some popularity among recreational users. There's even a prescription medication that contains THC, called dronabinol, and is sold as Marinol in the U.S. But Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a leading neurosurgeon and chief medical correspondent for CNN, says that, medically speaking, these are not the optimal ways to consume cannabis. Richardson father risks freedom to promote cannabis treatments for his daughter A few times a month, Mark Zartler of Richardson, Texas commits a crime that helps his daughter who cannot help herself. 17 years ago, Christy Zartler gave birth to twin girls. "When they came home, Keeley, her twin, came home first," said Christy. "Three days Kara followed her." From there, they began the difficult, years-long task of learning how to treat Kara’s Cerebral Palsy and severe Autism. There are a slew of her pills on their kitchen counter. Antipsychotics and enzymes and sleep aids. Still, few things helped fight off the worst of her symptoms. A neighbor first suggested years ago that cannabis could ease Kara’s symptoms. Mark then found that by grinding marijuana buds, and heating them to 410 degrees Fahrenheit, it created the vapor that serves as an immediate rescue response to his daughter’s most violent behavior. In this episode, I discuss cannabis (aka marijuana), including the biological mechanisms underlying its effects on the mind and body, its known medical applications, its impact on libido, creativity, hunger, hormones and more. I also cover the known adverse health consequences of chronic and even acute (one-time) use and the factors that determine if cannabis is helpful or harmful. Additionally, I detail how the various strains of cannabis: sativa, indica and hybrid strains, can produce such divergent effects depending on the strain type, THC-to-CBD ratio, total dosage, and frequency of use. I review why cannabis can impact speech patterns and one’s propensity to develop anxiety/depression during and after use and, in some individuals, paranoia. As the legal landscape for cannabis is rapidly evolving, this episode should interest a wide audience, including former/current cannabis users, those in the medical, sports, law enforcement, and educational communities and, of course, children, teenagers, and parents. #HubermanLab #Science #Health Thank you to our sponsors AG1 (Athletic Greens): 🤍 Levels: 🤍 Thesis: 🤍 InsideTracker: 🤍 Supplements from Momentous 🤍 Huberman Lab Premium 🤍 Social & Website Instagram: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 TikTok: 🤍 LinkedIn: 🤍 Website: 🤍 Newsletter: 🤍 Articles Inspired by Mary Jane? Marijuana is the common term for cannabis that is derived from the plant Cannabis sativa. This plan has hundreds of chemicals in it called cannabinoids. The two main cannabinoids in the cannabis plant that we’ve studies are Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC and cannabidiol or CBD. THC has mind altering properties and CBD does not. The reason cannabis has an effect in the body is that cannabinoids are neurotransmitters or chemicals that affect the activities of nerves. We make our own cannabinoids called the endocannabinoid system. The two endocannabinoids are anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol. References Castillo PE, Younts TJ, Chávez AE, Hashimotodani Y. One of the most common things people want to know is whether alcohol or marijuana is worse for your brain and overall health. The scientific evidence and the brain imaging work at Amen Clinics show that neither one is good for you. Alcohol is not a health food, and marijuana is not an innocuous substance. But is one of them more damaging than the other? At first glance, it might seem that alcohol does the most damage to our brain health and general well-being because it is more widely used. Over 85% of American adults say they’ve consumed alcohol at some point in their lives, and nearly 70% say they’ve had a drink in the past year, as reported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Compare that to just 18% of Americans who said they used marijuana in 2019, according to the CDC. Although not as widespread, the harmful effects of marijuana on the brain may be greater. Let’s take a closer look at some of the worst consequences of drinking and marijuana. Cannabis is used by Americans across the country to treat all manner of health conditions, with the science backing up these health claims. But beyond the relief and euphoria that cannabis can offer, there's pushback to the legalization trend: experts say there's increasing evidence of long-term harms. VITALS host Sheena Williams debunks five surprising health-related myths about cannabis use with the help of cannabis specialist Dr. Peter Grinspoon. It has the goal of surveying the health data of over 1 million participants. - 🤍 - 🤍 Marijuana Use Disorder While one study estimated that approximately 3 in 10 people who use marijuana have marijuana use disorder, another study estimated that people who use cannabis have only a 10% likelihood of becoming “addicted.” The measurement and classification of cannabis use disorder as an addiction is controversial: as Dr. Grinspoon explains, “[cannabis] does help people. It helps people with anxiety, with pain, with sleep, with boredom, with loneliness…And it's not a simple thing to disentangle—you can't just write off a third of patients.” - 🤍 - 🤍 - 🤍 - 🤍 Cannabis Use and Schizophrenia Using Danish health records for over six million individuals, one study found that as many as 30% of cases of schizophrenia among men aged 21 to 30 could have been prevented had they avoided cannabis use disorder. The study author, however, flagged that Denmark does not have as much diversity as the US and that genetics do play a role in schizophrenia risk. Again, a correlation isn’t enough to imply causation, but the study findings may warrant caution. - 🤍 - 🤍 Marijuana, Race, and Policy - 🤍 - 🤍 Other studies and data mentioned - 🤍 - 🤍 - 🤍 - 🤍 - 🤍 - 🤍 00:00 Intro 02:03 Myth #1: Marijuana is natural, healthy 05:02 Myth #2: Marijuana isn't addictive 07:03 Myth #3: Cannabis is safe for the brain 07:56 Myth #4: Weed can replace prescription sleep aid 09:22 Myth #5: Weed can cure anxiety/depression 11:03 Weed, Policy, & Race 12:20 Outro/Sheena's Story

Marijuana is getting more and more popular every year. Public sentiment is shifting and states across the U.S. have begun legalizing pot for medical and recreational use. But what does marijuana do to your brain? How does weed work in your body? What are the possible risks and benefits of marijuana use? In this episode of Neuro Transmissions, Alie Astrocyte explains what we understand about the effects of cannabis - and what we still have yet to figure out. We’ll describe the endocannabinoid system, what causes the difference between sativa and indica strains, side effects, and what your brain on drugs really looks like. Big thanks to all of the people at the start who contributed different slang words for cannabis. I was surprised by some common ones missing though, like bud, hash, reefer, dope, skunk, chronic...to name a few. Got some more? Leave ‘em in the comments below!
