What Do Earwigs Do With Those Pincers Anyway? | Deep Look

Earwigs are equipped with some pretty imposing pincers on their rear, and they're not afraid to use them. But when it comes to these appendages, size isn't everything. You can learn more about CuriosityStream at 🤍 SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! 🤍 DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. Many animals seem to show a preference for symmetry in a potential mate. It can be a clue that the mate has the genes necessary to develop properly and thrive in an environment full of stresses and dangers. But in some critters buck the trend. Like the earwig, a diminutive insect found on every continent except Antarctica. Andrew ZInk, an associate professor of biology at San Francisco State University, has been looking at how symmetry affects earwigs success when it comes to social interactions. He’s studying maritime earwigs, a larger and more powerful cousin to the common European earwig you might find in your backyard. Both creatures bear fearsome looking pincers on their backsides. And they aren’t afraid to use them to defend themselves. Zink knows all about that. - Do earwigs climb into your ear? The quick answer is no. Earwigs are not interested in climbing into your ear to lay their eggs or otherwise. They’re no more likely than any other bug to accidentally find its way into you ear. The name earwig come from the old english words for ear and insect. It may have been named after the shape of the common European earwig’s wings, which when extended resemble a human ear. - Do earwigs pinch people? Earwigs will use their pincers to defend themselves, but the pinch is typically not strong enough to be considered dangerous. - Do earwigs fly? Male common European earwigs have wings and can fly to disperse and find mates. Females do not have wings or fly. Neither male nor female maritime earwigs have wings or fly. - What do earwigs eat? Most earwigs are scavengers and omnivores. In addition to scavenging and eating plants, the common European earwigs also hunts small prey like aphids. Maritime earwigs are carnivorous hunting smaller arthropods like sand hoppers. -+ Read the entire article on KQED Science: 🤍 -+ For more information: Biologists probe asymmetric warfare between earwigs 🤍 Asymmetric Forceps Increase Fighting Success among Males of Similar size in the Maritime Earwig 🤍 Sexual selection by the seashore: the roles of body size and weaponry in mate choice and competition in the maritime earwig (Anisolabis maritima) 🤍 -+ More Great Deep Look episodes: Watch These Cunning Snails Stab and Swallow Fish Whole | Deep Look 🤍 This Is Why Water Striders Make Terrible Lifeguards | Deep Look 🤍 Take Two Leeches and Call Me in the Morning | Deep Look 🤍 -+ See some great videos and documentaries from PBS Digital Studios! Introduction: 0:00 How to Identify Earwigs: 0:37 How to Inspect for Earwigs: 1:22 How to Treat for Earwigs: 2:34 How to Prevent Earwigs: 5:51 * Earwigs, also known as pincher bugs, are small, bizarre looking insects known to invade structures in massive populations or even cause damage to gardens or other lawn ornamentals. Earwigs are small, brown, slender insects that vary in length depending on the species, but generally range from ¼ of an inch to 1 inch. Across all species, these insects are recognizable for the pincers on their rears, which led to their nickname pincher bugs. Male earwigs have more curved pincers while females have straight pincers. These pincers have multiple uses, from self-defense to establishing dominance. Earwigs prefer to live in moist, undisturbed locations. Check in and around your home for areas high in humidity or spots where moisture collects. Outdoors, look for spots where standing water can form, and also spots that can retain high amounts of moisture like, bricks, wood piles, mulch beds and leaves. If you suspect earwigs of attacking ornamentals or other garden plants, you can examine affected plants for signs of damage. Earwigs will eat leaves, forming ragged edges and holes. They’ll also leave behind small black droppings, which differentiates their activity from other pests, like snails who’ll leave behind visible mucus trails instead. Indoors, you should check areas like your basement, garage, bathroom, laundry room and any room that can reasonably become very humid. Move boxes and clutter aside, and note any sites that will need to be addressed. Check the outer perimeter of your structure for entry points earwigs can use to get into your home, like around doors, windows, or other cracks and voids in the wall. Take note of every site you find, as these will direct where you’ll focus your treatment. After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time to start treatment. Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry. To get rid of earwigs on your property, you’ll need to use insecticides labeled for earwig control like, Reclaim IT, Ficam Insect Bait, and D-Fense Dust. Prevention is essential to keeping pests in check. Even after you’ve applied pesticides, the best way to stop earwig activity is to make sure it can’t happen. Since earwigs are attracted to moisture, you’ll take measures to reduce the moisture content in and around your home and utilize common exclusion practices to prevent them from coming inside. This will make your property much less conducive for earwigs to inhabit, forcing them to seek shelter elsewhere. To reduce moisture, repair any leaks and utilize air conditioning to reduce your structure’s overall moisture content. Pick up leaf piles, bricks, firewood, & other debris, and clean out rain gutters and drain pipes so earwigs have less areas to inhabit. Rake, dethatch, and aerate your lawn to encourage air circulation, and trim back tree branches to reduce shade and encourage proper water-retention in your lawn. To stop earwigs and other pests from invading, repair any damaged door or window screens and seals. Then, seal cracks and crevices along the interior and exterior perimeter of your structure with copper mesh and caulk. Earwigs! Are They Dangerous?

#insects #earwigs #nature Earwigs, look out for your ears! No, they RARELY burrow into ears. Earwigs (Dermeptera) are part of a group of insects related to crickets grasshoppers, stick insects and even cockroaches, but are mostly in a group of their own. Earwig comes from the old english name "éare wicga" wich means ear insect. Watch this video to learn a lot about these illusive nocturnal arthropods. Earwig VS Cockroach, Insect Battle

#Cockroach #Insect I got a few earwigs a few days ago. This kind of insect preys fiercely. When it encounters a cockroach, what will happen?

Top 6 reasons you have earwigs

🤍 Top 6 reasons you have earwigs 🤍 Earwigs are a pretty gross pest and they got that name because people thought they would climb in ears and lay eggs in your brain. While that isn’t really true, you’ll learn in this post the top 6 reasons you have earwigs in your home. Most earwigs overwinter in homes to survive As temperatures get colder throughout the year, many pests will be looking for new homes to breed and nest in. This is the sort of things earwigs do as well, which is why you may be seeing them in your home. As a precaution, you may want to focus on sealing entry points where pests get in. Earwigs are very small, and like most insect pests, they can squeeze in gaps as little as an 1/8th of an inch. Many insect pests like earwigs come in through places such as under doors, through gaps in windows, as well as through tiny cracks in the walls and foundation around your home. We recommend that sealing those potential entry points as well as establish a barrier treatment of pest control product to quickly eliminate those pest that do make it through. This can help reduce and eliminate pests before they are able to start nesting in your home. Thigmotactic preferences the anti-claustrophobic pest Now you’ve probably heard of things being claustrophobic and hating tight enclosed spaces, but there are actually things that enjoy tight spaces. Earwigs are such pests. The scientific term for it is thigmotactic. This means that these pests actually enjoy being squished into small tight spaces (positively thigmotactic). This is why pests like roaches and earwigs will come into your home as well. They want to be squished in small places inside your home like inside tiny cracks and in between the walls of your home. Food sources bring in earwigs Another common reason you could see earwigs in your home this winter is that during the transition to fall and winter, many food sources become more readily available in close proximity to the home. Depending on the species earwigs can feed on both plant mater as well as insects and other pests. The pest-eating kind are less common, but earwigs are very versatile pests. They enjoy living in dark, moist places and those typically are very abundant during the fall. One common cause of this is falling leaves. As leave piles build up and start to decay, they can create a lot of benefits for earwigs. As a food source, earwigs feed on the decaying leaves. As a food source for other pests as well, this also attracts other pests to the leafy area. The earwigs can eat those pests as well. Fall in general also attracts pests into your home from colder temperatures, so as other pests come into your home earwigs can follow. Excess moisture Excess moisture is common from things like decaying leaves which is an attractive food sources for earwigs, but also creates an ideal environment for breeding. Earwigs like to lay eggs in moist dark areas as well. To help prevent this, you can clear out leaf piles and leaves in your gutters. Fixing leaky faucets and pipes is another step to reduce moisture. You may also consider installing dehumidifiers to reduce excess moisture in places like basements and attics, where these pests can gather. Aggregation pheromone Earwigs also release a special pheromone that attracts more of these pests together. Pheromones are communication scents that some pests release. Earwigs use these scents as a means of both defense against other threats, as well as to attract more of their same species. Since these pests enjoy tight knit quarters, bringing in more of their friends only makes sense! Exterior lighting The last major reason you can have an influx of earwigs in your home leading into winter is that your exterior lights may be bringing them in. Like many other pests, earwigs are attracted to light, but with other pests being attracted, it creates a food source for earwigs as well. This light attraction can bring in earwigs all year long, but typically you’ll have your exterior lights on for longer periods as it heads into winter. With the additional hours of your exterior lights being on, the chances of earwigs being attracted into your home from it increases. You can reduce this element by reducing the amount of time the exterior lights are on, or simply replace exterior lighting with bug bulbs or other bulbs that are less attractive than traditional incandescent bulbs. Keep in mind that it is not just exterior lights, but light that may flood out of the interior of the home to the exterior via windows. Have a question for us? What Happens If An Earwig Gets Into Your Ear? / Documentary (English/HD)

There have been myths surrounding earwigs that have been passed on to successive generations. One of the popular myths propagated for years is that earwigs can crawl up to our ears and seek shelter. It is true that they can perfectly fit inside our ears. However, the motive and reason for them to seek our ears is not quite clear. Our ears offer the exact opposite of what their ideal habitats offer. Our ears are warm and dry. They require moist and dark areas. Another popular myth is that they feed on our brains. Earwigs are herbivores. They do not require meat in their diets. They also do not lay eggs in our ears as these folklores have made us believe. They require dark and dump areas for their eggs to thrive. Bibliography: Morgan, T. (2013). DO EARWIGS ACTUALLY CRAWL INTO YOUR EARS?. Retrieved from 🤍 Murrell, D. (2017). Can Ear Wigs Bite?. What Do Earwigs Do With Their Pincers Anyway?

Have you ever wondered why do earwigs have pincers, is it maybe to eat your brain or dig a hole in it for the eggs? SUBSCRIBE! 🤍 Earwigs are everywhere – turn over a log outside or lift up a rug in your house, and you might see one. They’re easily recognized by the large pincers on their back end.. You might be surprised to find out that earwigs form a diverse and interesting group. Earwigs are common all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica, and they’ve been around for hundreds of millions of years. In fact, the oldest earwig fossils date from the Late Triassic epoch, when earwigs evolved from an ancestral, cockroach-like insect. That’s before before the rise of the dinosaurs! There are over a thousand different species, from the common or European earwig which was first introduced to North America in the early 1900’s, to small parasitic species who give birth to live young, to the maritime earwig which lives near water, to the (relatively) huge St. Helena earwig, which, before being declared extinct in 2014, was known to grow up to 3 inches long. Most species of earwig are nocturnal and hide during the day in dark, moist nooks and crevices. In nature, they tend to stay underground or crawl under tree bark, dead leaves, and under logs or rocks. They can often also be found in sheds, houses, and other kinds of buildings. In these places, they like to hide in dark places where there is moisture, like bathrooms, basements, or crawlspaces. Due to the flat shape of their bodies, they can fit into tight spaces and small gaps in walls and ceilings, between floorboards, behind or under furniture, and under carpets. Maritime earwigs can be found near the shoreline, living under rocks or piles of debris and preying on smaller insects. Other species live as parasites on the bodies of larger animals – some parasitic species are especially known for living in the skin folds of bats and feeding on dead skin and bodily secretions. Like many insects, earwigs posses two sets of wings. Behind the leather, protective forewings are thin hindwings, distinctively shaped like a human ear. In fact, this resemblance is one possible reason earwigs got their name. Though the wings are functional and earwigs are perfectly capable of taking to the air, they are rarely seen in flight. Maybe they just prefer to get around by other means. For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: hello🤍beamazed.com

Earwig facts: Will they crawl in your EARS? | Animal Fact Files

Earwigs have a bad reputation. It's commonly believed that these animals purposefully crawl into human ears in an attempt to lay their eggs on a person's brain. This is ridiculous. While it is technically possible for an earwig to crawl into a person's ear, and it has been documented to have happened in the past, this is an exceptionally rare occurrence! And they definitely aren't interested in laying eggs in your brain, they would rather lay them in dirt! Earwig moms are excellent parents and care for their young to ensure they have a higher chance for survival. Their pincers look menacing but they aren't venomous. Earwigs are harmless to humans, though they can sometimes bite with an unpleasant pinch to the skin. Earwig Wings are Origami-Like | National Geographic

The hidden wings of the common earwig unfold to ten times their folded size, transforming the mostly ground-dwelling insect into a super-efficient flyer. ➡ Subscribe: 🤍 #NationalGeographic #Earwig #Insects About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Though it doesn’t often fly, it’s equipped with origami-like wings. The rear wings are remarkably compact when folded under the small, leathery forewings. When they open, the wings are ten times larger than the folded size. The open wings lock into place and remain stable—without the use of muscle power. An elastic, spring-like wing joint allows this stability. Researchers are attempting to replicate the earwig wing folds. The complex folds and efficient mechanics could have many applications, including folded tents, maps, and foldable electronics.
